As I said last month, I filed a public information request with the City of Oakland on May 2, asking for the crime report listings for beats 12Y and 13X for the months of February, March, and April. On May 31 I got a notice that my request had been closed because the data was released, with the note that “You may find the available crime data at the link below: https://www.crimemapping.com/map/agency/265”
I went to the link. The data on this is NOT equivalent to what I was using.
- Data only covers the last 7 days. I’ve looked at it several times and that’s always true. And in the last 7 days it shows NO crime reports on College Ave., which I don’t believe.
- You have to apply a (not obvious) filter to restrict the entries to reports from Oakland Police; when I first looked it was all the way from Berkeley to San Leandro.
- The “Location” field in the background database is blank – to get location information you have to enter your own address, and then it tells you how far away the incident was. It doesn’t tell you where it was. The position of the icon on the map is very general.
- There is no way to identify only reports in our 2 police beats. The data doesn’t contain a field identifying the police beat where the report was filed.
I sent Oakland Public Records an email that day, explaining why I wasn’t satisfied with the data they had “released.” On June 3 I received an identical email from them, referring me to the same link.
At this point I can’t continue to produce monthly crime statistics reports for beats 12Y and 13X. I have no access to the data. The page I’ve always used says, in bold face, “Last Updated Feb. 8, 2023.” And that’s all the data I can find. I’ve sent a message using the link “Contact Dataset Owner” to ask if it will ever be restored. If I get any kind of answer I’ll report it here.
Still no crime stats

I just checked the data site and downloaded what should have been the last 90 days of crime reports. There’s nothing in the file with a “real” date (one that has already happened) past February 7. I’ve always gotten the crime stats data from this site: https://data.oaklandca.gov/Public-Safety/CrimeWatch-Maps-Past-90-Days/ym6k-rx7a
Today the site even says, “data last updated February 8, 2023.”
I don’t know what I’ll get from this, but on May 2 I filed an official Public Records Request with the city of Oakland, asking them for the crime listings for beat 12Y and 13X for the months of February, March, and April 2023. In my comments I made it clear that what I really want is the data feed restored to its original site. If you want to look at my request, here’s the link:
https://oaklandca.nextrequest.com/requests/23-4213
I originally assigned the request to the Information Technology department; looking at it just now, I see they’ve added the Police Department as the lead responder, although IT is still on there. I’ll report on what I learn. I feel that, after having provided the citizens of Oakland with a reliable list of what crimes were reported in their neighborhoods since January 2013, suddenly removing the information is an unacceptable breach of transparency. The “last updated” date suggests strongly that this was related to the ransom ware attack on February 8, although what the ransom ware gang wanted with this information escapes me. And if the city has moved this data feed somewhere else, I want to know.

This was a hybrid meeting, using the OWL, with speakers from Oakland’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) on what their office is and does. Most of the attendees were there in person, only a few were on Zoom.
