I mentioned in the original January crime stats report that I didn’t think the data were complete. I have never gotten a clear response from the city’s IT Dept. on what happened, but when I checked the February reports, I also downloaded the January numbers again, and I believe that whatever was wrong with the data has been fixed. Here are the changes I saw:
Crimes against the person – almost no changes in either beat, 1-2 differences.
Property crime – no change in beat 12Y (11), but 13X had 18 records instead of the original 11
Property crime, auto related – beat 12Y went from 26 records to 46, beat 13X went from 5 to 7
Quality of life crime – beat 12Y went from 10 to 20 records, beat 13X went from 1 to 4 records
Other – beat 12Y went from 3 to 4, no change in beat 13X
These are not minor changes, and they made quite a difference. You can see how the individual numbers changed in the summaries at the head of the 2 stats PDFs. In general, Property Crime in January increased more than the original January report showed, and Auto-Related Property Crimes increased substantially in 12Y and were unchanged in 13X. Quality Of Life Crimes were up a few numbers in 12Y and down slightly in 13X, and there were a few reports in the Other category in January and fewer in February.
For the interested, I’ve left the original January report up on the web site, but the year-end graph we produce will only have the numbers from the revised January report.
